Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to buy special equipment or clothes?
Unlike other martial art forms, there is no imposed uniform for Krav Maga. Sweats and a Krav Maga t-shirt are sufficient. Wrist wraps are required and can be purchased at any of our locations. We do require that you bring body protection (groin protection for men) to each class and a mouth guard. We offer special discounts on all the above-mentioned equipment, and packages are available at any of our training centers' pro-shops
Can we take classes as a couple?
Why not? What better way to ensure that your better half is as prepared to face an attacker as you are? As an added bonus you are guaranteed a workout and training partner in your house as well.
How long will it take for me to become proficient at Krav Maga?
Krav Maga, unlike many other martial arts, is a very fast-progressing system. Part of its design was driven by the need to train people very quickly and very efficiently. Consequently, it typically takes a person of average physical ability perhaps only several months before significant progress is achieved and noticeable.
How safe is Krav Maga? Do I risk getting hurt?
Krav Maga is as safe as any other martial arts form. The chances of being injured during a class are as remote and even less than for any other sport. The chances of someone attacking you being injured, however, are extremely high.
I want to spar, is that available?
You bet! Krav Maga offers classes that include sparring and boxing (with all equipment- gloves, shin guards, mouthpiece, and head protection). In these classes, we focus on movement, combinations, technique, and mindset.
I'm a small person with little strength, what good is Krav Maga to me?
Krav Maga was designed to benefit the average person. The system is not about sheer strength or power. As a matter of fact one of the basic tenets of Krav Maga is that one should not oppose power with power. Rather, Krav Maga blends a combination of physical skill with mental self-defense determination. Consequently Krav Maga, is more accessible to more people of either sex, shape or size than many other martial art forms.

How to Defend Yourself Against Armed Assaults
By Imi Sde-Or (Lichtenfeld) & Eyal Yanilov
English-language edition published in mid 2001, by Dekel Publishing House.
Imrich ("Imi") Sde-Or*, founder of Krav-Maga, was born in 1910 in Budapest, which at the time was one of the centers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He grew up in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, in a home where sports, law, and Central European education were equally respected. Samuel Lichtenfeld, Imi's father, was undoubtedly quite a unique figure. At age 13 he joined a traveling circus, and for the next 20 years engaged in wrestling, weightlifting, and various demonstrations of strength. For him the circus was also a school, where he met people involved in a wide variety of sports, including some quite unusual ones. These people taught Samuel what they knew - including various martial arts......
With his father's encouragement, Imi became active in a wide range of sports. He first excelled in swimming, and subsequently in gymnastics, wrestling, and boxing. In 1928 Imi won the Slovakian Youth Wrestling Championship, and in 1929 the adult champion- ship (in the light and middle weight division). That year he also won the national boxing championship and an international gymnastics championship. During the ensuing decade, Imi's athletic activities focused mainly on wrestling, both as a contestant and a trainer. Year after year he won the ......
In the mid thirties, conditions began to change in Bratislava. Fascist and anti-Semitic groups appeared, determined to upset the public order and
harm the city's Jewish community. Imi became the un-crowned leader of a group of young Jews, most of them with a background in boxing, wrestling, and weightlifting. This group attempted to block the anti-Semitic bands from entering the Jewish quarter and wreaking havoc there. Thus, between 1936 and 1940 Imi took part in countless violent......
In 1940, having become a thorn in the side of the anti-Semitic inclined local authorities as a result of his activities, Imi left his home, family, and friends and boarded the last immigrant ship that succeeded in escaping the Nazis' clutches. The vessel was an old riverboat named Pentcho, that had been converted to carry hundreds of refugees from Central Europe to the land of Israel (then called Palestine). The gripping story of the Pentcho and its passengers is told in detail in the book Odyssey by John Birman (published by Simon & Shuster, New York, 1984). Imi's private odyssey aboard that ship and afterwards, which was filled with thrilling episodes, took about two years, .....
In 1944 Imi began training fighters in his areas of expertise: physical fitness, swimming, wrestling, use of the knife, and defenses against knife attacks. During this period, Imi trained several elite units of the Hagana and Palmach (striking force of the Hagana and forerunner of the special units of the IDF), including the Pal-Yam, as well as groups of police officers. In 1948, when the State of Israel was founded and the IDF was formed, Imi became Chief Instructor for Physical Fitness and Krav-Maga at the IDF School of Combat Fitness. He served in the IDF for about 20 years, during which time he developed and refined his unique method for self-defense and hand-to-hand combat. Imi personally trained the top......
After he finished his active duty, Imi began adapting and modifying Krav-Maga to civilian needs. The method was formulated to suit everyone - man and woman, boy or girl, who might need it to save his or her life or survive an attack while sustaining minimal harm, whatever the background of the attack - criminal, nationalistic, or other. To disseminate his method, Imi established two training centers, one in Tel Aviv and the other in Natanya. Throughout .......
..... Even during his last years, Imi continues to personally supervise the training of those who have attained high ranks in Krav-Maga, and to spend time with the instructors in Israel and abroad. Imi monitored the trainees' progress and achievements, captivating them with his personality and imparting them with his knowledge and unique personality.
Imi, a teacher, a fighter and a great human being, passed away on the 9th of January 1998, early in the morning, in the hospital just 5 hours after he got there, and with Eyal Y. at his bed-side.

How to Defend Yourself Against Armed Assaults
Alan Predolin was born in Italy on March 1st 1972.
His martial arts training started at age 7, when a family friend took him to a Karate Dojo in Vicenza, Italy.
The training took a different direction when Alan started traveling to the US in 1989 . Jeet kune Do was growing in popularity and self defense movements were becoming more prevalent. He had the chance to train with Dan Inosanto and other great martial artists that would then impact his view of Reality Based Training. As a young teenager he decided to become a part of the New York chapter of the Guardian Angels, a non profit group dedicated to reclaiming New York areas under the control of gangs and drug dealers. Patrolling areas like Hell’s Kitchen and the South Bronx without any weapons was a very eye opening experience as a young martial artist.
At age 21 he joined the Italian Army and was assigned to a special unit of the Airborne. While serving, he deployed to Somalia and Southern Italy, in support of the anti Mafia effort. Coming back from Somalia, his unit was sent to Israel for 2 weeks where he had his first exposure to Krav Maga.
In 1996 he moved to the US and joined the US Army 82nd Airborne, where he attended the Close Combat Instructor Course at the JFK Special Operations School in Ft. Bragg NC. Alan and his training partners were the first 2 soldiers to start an official Hand to Hand training program for the Division.
At the end of 1999 he got out of active duty and moved to New York City, where he started training full time with Krav Maga Instructor Rhon Mitzrachi. In 2001 he attended the Krav Maga Instructor course under Haim Zut, one of the founder’s original students. January 1st 2003 Alan and his wife Jenn moved to Los Angeles and he started teaching at the Krav Maga Worldwide National Training Center. This experience proved to be great, not only because it made him understand how Krav Maga was promoted in different areas of the country, but also exposed him more to the business side of owning a school.
July 2003, while still teaching with Krav Maga Worldwide, he started a small class, renting a room in a dance studio in Long Beach, CA. That December, with about 40 students, he opened his 1st location.
In 2006, in order to maintain the training connection with Israel, Alan contacted Eyal Yanilov, Chief Instructor for the International Krav Maga Federation. Eyal was the successor to Imi, founder of Krav Maga, and was also the teacher of all senior instructors operating in the US, including Krav Maga Worldwide Chief Instructor Darren Levine.
Since 2001 Alan has made it a point to continue growing as a martial artist and has always made it a priority to travel to Israel to continue his training.
Currently Alan is the Director of the International Krav Maga Federation USA owns 360 Combat Club and teaches ongoing courses for local/federal Law Enforcement and Military units from all branches. He is also a certified Kru in Muay Thai, instructor in Kali, CrossFit instructor and has trained and still trains with fighters/trainers like Marco Ruas, Bas Rutten and Randy Couture.
